30 days

Alright, an update - I think I'm going to have to take more than the month of August to complete this mammoth (not really) task. This week I've already spent 2 nights in the hospital with the baby, although I did get to try the Bengawan Solo Pandan Chiffon while I was there. Yums.

I'm not going to stress myself, so I'll just try to do it as fast as I can.

In the Beginning

Somewhat inspired by Julie & Julia, but mostly driven by my greed, plus given that it's my birthday month and birthdays are almost synonymous with cakes (wonder how that came about, conspired by a baker, perhaps?), and I'd be excused for indulging, I decided to cake my way through as many cakes as possible, in the month of August 2010.

Once I'd set my mind to it, the first thing I did was of course to start eating and found that it wasn't so difficult, especially if the cakes were easily accessible.

When I was young we started eating cakes from Sara Lee. Then my mother thought, these seem pretty easy to make, so she attended a class, or a few classes (I was pretty young then), and soon she was baking cakes for other people and eventually to sell as well. I've always just ungratefully eaten then rather than learn, until she stopped baking when I had my first son and she helped me attend to him when I went back to work. It wasn't until then that I started to miss the cakes-on-demand, and now I feel the urge to whip up some home cooked goodies, given that the hubby is quite a chef himself (he knows more about baking than I do), and our elder son is always quite interested in the kitchen. Plus he loves "buffins" (muffins) so much that I have to avoid saying the word around him.

My mum's cakes are pretty old school though, and I've been trying to open her eyes to the cakes of today. Let's see if her time staying with me over these next two months can inspire her, and hopefully some of those baking skills might rub off on me.

So here goes, I'm going to try and eat at least 30 cakes by 31 August 2010.

And then maybe I'll have to go on a diet.

(Yes I'm aware there are 31 days in August, not 30, but I'm not really planning to have the cakes daily, as some days there might be more than 1. )
